System Shock 2

System Shock 2
Language: ENG | PC | Developer: EA - Games | 290 Mb
Genre: First Person Shooter/Science Fiction
System Shock 2 (commonly abbreviated SS2 or Shock2) is a science-fiction horror-themed PC game that incorporates elements commonly seen in first-person shooters and role-playing games. The title was developed by Looking Glass Studios and Irrational Games as a direct sequel to the seminal 1994 PC game System Shock and was released on August 11, 1999 by publisher Electronic Arts to widespread acclaim. Despite poor sales, System Shock 2 has since become a cult classic and is now regarded by critics as one of the greatest games ever made.

Additional Info:
This game can be played in co-operative mode with an additional three players (four in total) on a local area network. Using Hamachi, the co-operative mode can be played online. I personally recommend the co-operative play, it is extremely fun with the full four players. There are modifications available that can enhance gameplay graphic-wise and more.
System Requirements:
- Windows 9x.
- Pentium or K6 200+ MHz.
- 32 MB RAM.
- DirectX 6+.
- Highcolor 4 MB PCI or AGP video card.

Conquest Review

Risk fans rejoice! Your favourite board game is now available for use against one, two or even three computer opponents. You no longer have to scrounge around at odd hours of the night hoping someone will take your challenge. With the aid of your PC you can choose to fight in Europe of 1942 or Scotland 1750.
Like the popular board game, CONQUEST is a strategy war game. The object is to conquer territories adjacent to countries which you hold. CONQUEST has several enhanced features which are not in Risk. Fast moving computer opponents provide only breathing time before it's your turn once again. A fine text window displays all the necessary information as battles ensue. The graphics employed outline and colour in conquered territories quickly. At the beginning of a turn, you are allotted a certain number of armies. You can deploy them wherever you see fit. Troops not deployed are stored for your next turn.
Next, you can either attack or finish your turn. Each country is displayed with the owner's colour and the total amount of occupying armies. After attacking and defeating the enemy, you decide how many troops to leave and how many to move into your new territory. After this decision, the computer fills in the newly conquered land with your colour. Attacking continues until you decide to stop. For the last move of your turn, you can pull troops away from the front lines to be stored along with your allotted armies for the next turn. In this way, you can muster strength for counter attacking or even defending your front lines. To start the game, you can choose the number of armies to be placed in each country. Three is suggested, although the experienced player can decide to start with up to nine. If you like to show off your computer, you can have two, three or four computer opponents square off at each other. Any combination of human and/or computer opponents up to four can play. Ownership of countries at the start of each game can be the same, or you can opt to have the countries randomly distributed. When time is short and the war is still on, a "save" feature permits you to continue at a later time.
One major problem occurred when I was loading in the European map. After being prompted by the computer, the map of Europe was drawn in. Just before the countries were coloured in, I received an error message stating "out of memory 2080". From that point, it was impossible to proceed. After contacting Sirius I finally was lead to the easy solution. It seems that because my machine has an asynchronous communications card, Basic will automatically allocate a communications buffer when it boots up. So to prevent this from happening, make sure you type in Basica/ c: 0 instead of Basica (as the directions call for). This will cause Basic to start up with 0 buffers. With this problem solved, I had no trouble loading in the European game.
All in all, CONQUEST is an enhanced version of a popular board game. The several options of game set-up provide variety that makes the game life last after countless use. Graphics and text window display are done well. The documentation is adequate, although the directions should address errors that could occur with loading more adequately. The gamer who enjoys spending hours and hours on one detailed battle may not appreciate the ease and uncomplicated nature of battle. However, most gamers will enjoy the swiftness of execution and the ebb and flow of battle.

The Enchanter Review

You stand at a fork in the road, holding nothing but your spell book. Your mind is dazed from the immensity of recent events: from nowhere, you, a lowly novice enchanter, were summoned into the presence of the august Circle of Enchanters, and charged with an almost impossible task: to enter the domain of the powerful warlock Krill, and destroy him.
As the dawn sun rises over the land, you draw a deep breath, choose your path, and trudge off along a dusty road. Thus begins THE ENCHANTER, the latest member of Infocom's stable of winners. It has all the touches you have come to expect (even demand!) of them: the great command parser, excellent text descriptions, intriguing puzzles, and coherent story line, to name a few. The one difference between this game and most of the other Infocoms is that you know exactly what has to be done from the very start. No guesswork about the ultimate objective is necessary, although that doesn't mean getting there is easy!
In this game, the use of magic is all important. You start out with four spells in your possession, and as you progress, you will find scrolls with other spells written on them (one per scroll). Some of these spells you can "write" into your spell book, thus making them re-usable. However, some are so powerful and complicated that you can't transfer them into your book, and so they can be used only once (the scroll vanishes after use). As you wander through this land of enchantment, you will come across various creatures, some helpful, some not so helpful, and some that are merely red herrings. You will have to determine in which category each of these beings are, and act accordingly.
Also, your actions should be considered with great care: some situations have more than one solution, and choosing the wrong one will put the game hopelessly out of reach. It's always best to save a game before experimenting, and this one is no exception. All sorts of unpleasant things (such as being rated a -10 "menace to society") can happen when you start messing around with magic. Food and water are also important, as well as sleeping: periodically throughout the game, you will be reminded of your body's physical needs and woe unto you if they aren't satisfied!
Finding a water supply and something edible at the beginning of the game is a must. There are also some rather neat tie-ins with the Zork series. If you've played ZORK III, you might recall Scenic View 4, the sacrificial altar and monstrous creatures. Well, you'll learn a little more about them in this game, maybe more than you'd like to! You may also come across a vaguely familiar person in one of the Mirror Rooms.
THE ENCHANTER is a lot of fun to play, especially with some of the deft touches of humour here and there throughout the game. In terms of difficulty, I would rate it as being harder than Planet fall, but not as hard as Suspended or the Zorks. Bottom Line: Another typically excellent game from Infocom.

Delta Squadron Review

Delta Squadron (DS) is a strategic space war simulation. You, as the Legion Alliance Squadron Commander, must direct up to 34 small one or two seat fighters down a long trench and destroy the Satellites Main Power Induction Inverter. This will result in the destruction of their station (Does this sound familiar to you? I hope so). You must assign some ships to fly cover while others are set for on-course targeting.
The Satellites will use their own Tactical and Tactical Command Fighters as well as ground defence systems to prevent you from accomplishing your mission. Delta Squadron has nine scenarios with a save option so that you may quit your game and come back to it later. Each of the scenarios are colour coded to designate the average playing time, which can be from one to three hours on the average. In all of the scenarios you must enter or already be in the trench to ultimately be able to launch your photon torpedo down the MPII (Main Power Induction Inverter) and win the game. Data is available on every fighter whether it is friendly or enemy.
This data is very important in your strategy. For instance, pilots are ranked according to their flight experience and length of service. The more experienced the pilot, the more accurate their targeting skills and greater their evasive abilities during combat situations. It is wise to attack the enemy with a pilot of at least the same rating or higher. To win, you must navigate an on course Alpha or Beta fighter down the trench and land directly on the MPII so that the ship can fire its photon torpedo on the Inverter before running out of time. There is a 20% chance that the shot will fail so have some backup at all times.
As always, there are many ways to lose. Have all of your ships shot out from under you, you lose. Run out of time, you lose. Have no on-course Alpha and Beta fighters, you lose.
Miss the target, you lose. Fun, isn't it? This game has it all and, if I haven't mentioned it already, you need a colour television or monitor to play. Well, you could possibly play with a black and white monitor, but you would have a difficult time telling the good guys from the bad. It also wouldn't be very enjoyable. As I was saying, there are 3-D animated graphics throughout the game. In the beginning, you see all the fighters in animated 3-D. When you fire on an enemy fighter you switch to an animated 3-D view screen and you fire at the fighter through crosshairs. If you fly over a turret you get to see it take pot-shots at you. If there is a hit your fighter blows up. When and if you get as far as the MPII you again switch to 3-D and watch the photon torpedoes go down the tube (if your shot is good). The finale is watching the Satellite blow up. You did make it to the end didn't you?
Delta Squadron is a strategic space war game for those people who are tired of the text and coloured grid games. My only request is that the next time, NEXA incorporate the fancy graphics into the actual game where the player can interact with them, rather than have to sit back and watch. The program is a bit slow due to it being a 100% graphic format but, after a few games, I forgot about it. This was because of the ease of playing the game with paddles.
